Introducing the Digital Service Standard 2.0
8 December 2023
The Digital Service Standard 2.0 (DSS 2.0) officially launched this week, marking a significant leap towards improved digital experiences across government.
After nearly 7 years, the Digital Service Standard received a well-deserved update. Shaped by agency feedback, best practice principles and global insights, the enhancements to the Digital Service Standard balance quality guidance with simple criteria — this makes it easier for agencies to understand and follow.
Formed in response to the myGov User Audit, the Digital Service Standard 2.0 is aligned to strategic government initiatives, including the Data and Digital Government Strategy.
What’s new in version 2.0
We engaged with 200 staff from 29 agencies to inform changes to the Digital Service Standard. The guidance highlights the need for trust, digital protection and inclusion to make sure no one is left behind.
Updates include:
- easier to follow requirements, with criteria reduced to 10 stages down from 13
- refreshed guidance and resources including a Digital Experience Toolkit
- the inclusion of staff-facing services and a timeline to support the transition.

Continuous improvement
We're committed to meeting the changing needs of the people who use digital services and agencies that deliver them. Over the coming months we'll improve our guidance as we continue critical discussions on key themes from engagement, including accessibility and inclusion.
We'll consult on the Exemptions Policy and Compliance Monitoring Framework before the requirements come into effect on 1 July 2024.
